Ballet inspired photography by Peter Coulson

I have recently discovered this collection of images by famous fashion and art photographer Peter Coulson and simply adore the craziness of these photos featuring model Tara Hurster.

Over the past year we’ve seen many more photo shoots featuring a ballet theme and tutus, thanks to the success of critically acclaimed film Black Swan. This set of images features Tara Hurster wearing a head-to-toe explosion of tutus and the result is one of the more eccentric interpretations of ballerina style that I’ve come across in recent months!

New York ballet style from Natalie Portman & Drew Barrymore

New mum Black Swan star Natalie Portman and mum-to-be Drew Barrymore both rocked up at the New York City Ballet Spring Gala at The Lincoln Centre this weekend. And both stars looked über-elegant in top-to-toe tulle!

As the face of Miss Dior Cherie Portman unsurprisingly wore a tiered Christian Dior gown and wore the ultimate ballet accessory on her arm – her dancer and Black Swan choreographer husband Benjamin Millepied. And my favourite actress Drew Barrymore chose ballet-pink accessories & makeup to complement her angelic flowing white Chanel frock (which emphasised her blossoming baby bump!).

Lovely ballet-style fashion without looking like they’ve fallen into the dressing-up box – Well done ladies!

Famous Tutus – Even men love a tutu!

Its been yeeeeaaars since I last saw Ace Ventura Pet Detective and when I spotted it being re-run on a freeview channel I couldn’t believe my eyes – Jim Carey in a tutu?! I don’t remember that scene at all! But it is true and here’s the pictures to prove it:

And that’s not all – Jim Carey also donned another tutu to spoof this year’s smash hit ballet movie Black Swan on Saturday Night Live in the US.

I think he’s quite comfortable wearing tutus now – maybe he’ll be a spokesperson for Cassiefairy.co.uk ??! What do you think about men sporting tutus? Considering the number of stag parties that feature tutus, I think it’s a growing trend! Leave a comment below & let me know what you think.

Famous Tutus – The aptly named Pixie Lott

Possibly the most regular tutu-wearing celeb of all time – the fairy Pixie herself!

First spotted at Glastonbury a couple of years ago in this frilly fairy dress she has since been a slave to her tutus – including fluffy tutus in her Black Swan style music video costumes and on-stage performances:

I really like how Pixie has combined stompy biker boots with a girly dress and frilly tutu – total rock-chic look!

And here’s the Cassiefairy.co.uk version of Pixie’s black tutu with a sparkly silver twist:

Spring/Summer Colour Trend

I’ve been looking forward to this spring/summer season for sometime, as I love the colours and fabrics that are hitting the High Street in 2011.

Colour Trend Mood Board

Flesh tones, blush pinks, rose shades and cream combine to create a sugary-sweet look reminiscent of ballerina tutus = again tapping into the popularity of the ballet trend influenced by the award winning film Black Swan.

Here’s Cassiefairy’s take on the soft dusky pink shades trend for Spring/Summer 2011:

Ballet Trend on Lorraine Kelly’s ITV show

I have really enjoyed the ballet trend feature on the Lorraine Kelly show yesterday morning (16th March 2011). The looks that Mark Heyes has put together makes it very wearable in everyday life BUT I prefer the beautiful chiffon and tulle dresses and cute cardigans featured in the opening video for the fashion segment.

I think that the growth in this trend, which has been triggered by the 2011 film Black Swan, shows just how much women want to return to the world of whimsical fantasy of their childhood – lets face it, every girl wanted to be a ballerina or fairy princess at some point in their youth!

As a costume-maker and tutu enthusiast, I’ve never really let go of this childish ideal but now everyone can inject a bit of fantasy into their lives – even if it is only a pink floral headband or floaty skirt. And those of you who already have commissioned a Cassiefairy Tutu will have another use for it as a fashion item this season!

Tutus in fashion ?

I ‘ve been having a look around on the internet for some tutu-based inspiration from fashion designers that I admire and some of these are absolutely beautiful – but then again, some are absolutely crazy and even I would never wear them out in public! Let me know what you think of these designer gowns and what inspiration you think I can draw from these images!
