Here’s one of my favourite pieces of furniture…

Do you remember this? Think back to your school days – was there one in your art classroom?? Did you have a drawer to yourself for your valuable prints and sketches?

I certainly remember trying to squeeze my work into a plan chest like this when I was at school, and again when studying art and photography at 6th form. And again whilst doing my Masters at university. And one drawer was never enough room for me…

Which is why I’ve finally got a whole chest! My lovely husband spotted this plan chest in an old furniture seller’s yard and snapped it up! This second-hand shop is run to help charities in Africa so I am delighted that I can not only rescue and recycle an old piece of school furniture, not only can I help out a charity, but I can also re-live my childhood and get masses of extra storage space to boot.

It took a fair bit of manoeuvering to get the chest into our workshop, and a lot of rearranging of our existing furniture (this plan chest is massive) but now it’s nicely nestled in the corner of our studio and gives me another vast cutting desk for measuring out fabric and cutting patterns on.

One downside is that my artist husband loves it as much as I do and therefore, once again, I’m only allocated one drawer. Pants.
